Summer Holiday Letter

15th December, 2014

Dear Parents & Caregivers,

The long NZ summer school holidays are just around the corner and it will be important that your child continues to practise his/her English daily. A great way to do this is to have your child participate in activities that allows your child to speak English with other children. A ‘play date’ with an English speaking friend is always a good idea.

If you are staying in Auckland for the summer holidays then there are a huge range of events listed on the Auckland Council website under ‘Out and About’. These include:
·         Art in the Park
·         Beach Days
·         Glow worm night trails
·         Kite Days
And many more. You can find out more information on their website:
www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/EN/newseventsculture/events/Events/Pages/outandabout.aspx

The Parnell Trust will run a holiday programme right here at school called ‘Summer Blast’.   More information can be found on this website: www.parnell.org.nz/Parnell-Trust-Children-School-Holiday-Programmes-Intro.htm or you can phone 555 5194

Your local library has launched a free ‘Dare to Explore’ summer reading adventure. Dare to Explore is about reading every day (even if it's just a little bit) and completing some fun challenges. Your child can sign up using the online registration form: www.aucklandcitylibraries.com/DigitalLibrary/BizformMOSS/daretoexplore.aspx
Then you will need to visit your local library to pick up a passport that your child can use to collect stamps for each challenge they complete and keep track of the books they've been reading. You’re your child finishes at least four challenges, they'll be invited to a party!

Also, our www.sunshinonline.com.au subscription is available all summer for everyone to enjoy.

Lastly, if your child is interested in science, technology, engineering and maths, then there are several places in Auckland who offer great workshops & camps. Here is that info:

Warmest wishes & season greetings to you and your family. You will also find a digital copy of this letter on the ESOL blog www.parnellschoolesol.blogspot.co.nz.
